Star Fleet: TROM Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

Postby Shane » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:36 pm

That's brilliant, cheers for that Vanessa! I think I can do something with a billion year window to work with. Yeah, there's a scientific theory that the universe is around 13.75 billion years old, so if the energy beings were a product of the universal creation, we're talking potential gods here, although I've always liked the theory that the entire universe could be a test tube experiment being performed by mad scientist cats. A millisecond in their time is a billion in ours. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program...

Quite chuffed with how this particular drawing has turned out. I think there's definitely a steam punk/sailing ship comic project on the horizon, after I've completed TROM.Anywho, presenting Makara's new ride:http://www.xbomber.co.uk/xarchiv....y_media

I must say I really like your latest drawing there Shane!I can see some of the design cues from the Kathaar cruiser from TOAS. Very clever indeed. I wouldn't mind one of these as a model Can I see Makara on deck there as well?I really like your idea that QUOTEthe entire universe could be a test tube experiment being performed by mad scientist cats. A millisecond in their time is a billion in ours.It reminds me of two things:Firstly that bit at the end of one of the episodes of the Young Ones, where they've just lost at University Challenge to Footlights College. Robbie Coltraine dressed as a "Mad Scientist" drops his huge sticky bun onto the earth, picking up the Young Ones, which he notices as "human beings the size of amoebas" and promptly feeds the bun to his Elephant. Some serious weirdness going on there!Secondly the premise in the latest Hitch Hikers Guide film that our world is an experiment by mice.I'm doing some thinking about the steampunk technology that could lie behind the space sailing ships. I'll post it in a bit.

Cheers. I'm a big fan of the Young Ones and the Hitch hikers Guide to the Galaxy. I read all the Hitch hiker's books when I went travelling in the middle east a few years ago. They were perfect travelling companions.

Woah! You went travelling in the Middle East? Hats off to you, you are braver than I! I loved the Young Ones, and also Bottom.I like the Hitchhikers guide, although it does get a bit too surreal for me at times My favourite book is called "How to be a Wally" by Paul Manning. If I'm down, it always makes me smile

As TROM is still a work in progress, slight amendments will be made to each chapter when I eventually come to compiling it into a single document complete with illustrations.I wont be changing the main plot though, just cleaning up a few things here and there. However in chapter one there is an amendment that I should point out now otherwise a later chapter might seem a little odd.In chapter one Arkama's cruiser destroys a small manned outpost that had been protecting the lost world of the ancients. The outpost will be changed into a faulty Thalian weapons platform. Which was left by the Imperial Master to defend the planet from unwanted visitors.

I've been scratching my head with some of the military ranks that are used in Star Fleet, it seems to be an odd mixture of army, navy and air force systems. The Imperial rank of Captain and Commander is slightly back to front too as a Captain would outrank a Commander in the real-world navy, but Commander Makara clearly outranks Captain Orion in the series. The rank of General appears to be the highest rank in Star Fleet as General Kyle is clearly the head honcho in the show. That would make No.1 and No.2 Lieutenant Generals. The Imperial Master could also be considered the equivalent rank of General with his executive council members acting as Lieutenant Generals.Anyway, the upshot of all of this crazy babble is I've concocted a rough guide of ranks that I'll be using In TROM to avoid any confusion.EDF: Star Fleet Imperial AllianceCadet N/ASpace Pilot/Soldier TermoidSquadron Leader Termoid Squad leaderLieutenant Specialist (e.g. Caliban)Captain CaptainCommander CommanderLieutenant General Executive CouncilGeneral Imperial Master

Good post there!I like the way we have all created and improved upon the original show's themes and ideas. Correcting a few along the way! I agree with your listings, with one addition. I pinched the idea from Star Trek about having Admiral as the top position, but this position being really a graceful exit for old Generals, to a retirement "armchair" position, like on Star Trek. As Kirk is forever trying to avoid the promotion to Admiral.Hence in my story, the outgoing General Miles is promoted to Admiral and makes way for the upcoming (and far more able) General Kyle.I can't think of an Alliance version of Admrial though, no-one is above the Imperial Master!

Groovy, I'll incorporate the rank of Admiral as well. I'm sure there's room for other ranks inbetween the ones I've listed, but I just wanted to give myself a rough guide.

I knocked up a cover/poster image for TROM:http://www.xbomber.co.uk/xarchiv....y_mediaWhile I was at it I thought I might as well do the same for the other completed fan fics. The Rise of the Alliance:http://www.xbomber.co.uk/xarchiv....y_m ... _mediaI'll sort one out for Omega/Checkmate too, when it's complete as I'm not sure who's still around to stick on the poster at the moment.
