VHS tapes - what do you do with them?

Postby FZeroOne » Tue Jun 17, 2003 6:16 pm

...I met your children; what did you tell them?ahem!Odd question, I know, but I would imagine quite a few people here have sizable VHS collections that they are gradually converting to DVD. I'm curious as to how people are getting rid of their old tapes. Are you giving them to friends? Taking them to second-hand shops? Charity shops? Is there some ecologically sound method of disposing of these tapes that might help build schools in improvished countries ( like the UK... )Or just stockpiling them in a bunker somewhere for when the BBC get round to doing a "I Love VHS" restropective in a few years time...?

VHS tapes - what do you do with them?

My pre-recorded tapes I'm giving to second-hand shops as I "upgrade" them. My ancient spare tapes I'm just binning as I go along - I don't know of any specialised way to get rid of them, although it's an interesting point - being plastic they're not massively biodegradable, are they?

Please please tell me now, is there something I should know? (I just had to quote the song I have always inextricably associated with Starfleet!)Is VHS officially going out of business soon? Why the hurry to get rid of the tapes?

Well, shops can get far more DVDs into a limited area than videos, the quality's better, more extras, no waiting for rewind etc. So yes, VHS' days are numbered, although still arguably easier for recording I suppose. Actually, if you're not fussed about extras and widescreen etc videos are incredibly good value now - it's virtually pointless renting them any more when you can get them for £3.99 not long after release. But like it or not, the future is digital...

DVD completely won me over by the fact that you don't have to rewind them. <shock> And, of course, for anime fans, DVD is "da bomb"; its just about killed the sub vs dub debate, so now we can only argue over just how short a magical girls skirt should be... Recording is not so much of an issue for me now, as I rarely get time to watch anything I might tape anyway, and anime fans who indulge in "fansubbing" seem to largely rely on VCDs or DiVX these days ( but if I tell you anymore, I'll have to kill you... )VHS is not quite dead yet ( I was a little surprised to find that after staying with a Japanese family for a few days - in the high-tech kingdom - they had a VHS player but no DVD player that I ever saw ) but its on its last lap. I think the only reason why its hasn't keeled over just yet is that no single recordable format has emerged to replace it; its arguable that, with HD recorders, and various types of DVD-R, no single format will have the field to itself anymore.

If it's anime tapes your getting rid of (probably only relevant to FZeroOne) and don't expect to get much/any money for them, you could donate them to your local (or not so local) anime club, if they have/would like to set up a lending library...NanimeW has a small lending library made up of donated tapes and promo DVDs. If someone likes something they've seen on tape, they can then go out and buy it on DVD.[Happosai]

After all, being lent tapes by strangers is partly how I ended up with a couple of creaking shelf-fulls of anime in the first place...!

Okay, will have a look round and decide who best will benefit. It would be nice to give a little back to the anime community at large; I've had a lot of help from it myself (no, not which treatment works...!)
