New Virus

Postby AndyThomas » Tue Jan 27, 2004 7:12 pm

I imagine those of you who read on-line news services will be aware of this already but there's a rather clever new virus doing the rounds which makes itself look quite convincingly like it's come from someone legitimate. I've just filtered several dozen messages - so do take extreme care when you're opening attachments over the next few days.

New Virus

Actually, there are two... MyDoom is the original one. It's actually reported to be the fastest spreading worm *ever* but has slowed dramatically now. MyDoom is a worm that spreads to Windows PCs with one sole purpose: to attack SCO's servers on the 1st day of February.MyDoom.b is a crude variation where someone took MyDoom and simply swapped changed the address of the attack to target Microsoft.Additional information can be found here:Latest virus clogs e-mail inboxes, targets SCOLike most, this one replicates by sending to everyone in your address book while spoofing the address to appear as if it is from anyone in your address book. That's why it looks like it's from someone legitimate -- because it usually is from someone legitimate.

Of course, it could do other minor nasty things as well, but this is the big one (aside from clogging e-mail systems and just being a nuisance in general).
