If my memory serves me correctly towards the end some of the characters were captured by some creatures who sacrifced people to a giant 'god' like substance inside a mountain. The god fed off the fear created by the sacrificiies(?). Thus one of the characters thought happy emotions and destroyed it... he got grabbed by loads of tenticles (looked horrible) and was consumed in the resulting carnage... Very dark indeed, I agree Hap.
