« Star Fleet / Publications - Showa Books
In 1980, Showa produced two colouring books, two sketchbooks and a notebook; all with impressive cover illustrations. These are occasionally available over Rinkya. Colouring Books (A and B) The two colouring books are half-way between A5 and A4 in size with full-colour front-cover illustrations. They contain 32 pages of images. Some of these images span a double page. I like the inside illustrations as well as the impressive covers since they put a different and attractive spin on the characters from the show. They might come in useful for younger children or trigger some creative inspiration among adults. Notebook (N) The smaller notebook (roughly A5) features colour illustrations on both the front and back covers. It contains plain paper with a small illustration of Legtrax on the bottom of each page. On the back three inside pages, it features the colouring images from pages 1 and 3 of colouring book 'A', as well as a maze puzzle. Sketchbooks The two sketchbooks are between A4 and A3 size, with large, full-colour cover illustrations. On the first inside page, is a colouring image. The remaining pages are blank. While I was able to obtain the version with the blue X-Bomber cover, I have not yet obtained the sketchbook with green Dai-X cover. Artwork All cover illustrations were apparently done by Toshio Okazaki. One possible exception is colouring book 'A' (with the red logo as opposed to green), which lacks the artist's signature and is done in a slightly different style. Scanning and Restoration Remarks Due to their age, the cover images have faded to varying extents. These have been saved with mild optimisation performed by the scanner. Photoshop-optimised (auto) versions have also been uploaded. The inside pages had yellowed around the edges and the outermost pages were especially discoloured. Scanning these in "illustration" mode made it easier remove this, although, in the case of one or two pages, quite a lot of work was needed to restore these manually in Photoshop. In the case of the larger-than A4 sketchbook, this needed to be scanned in two segments and image-stitched.
