Hi EyeWizard,

This is a very interesting question...
An easier way altogether for a better-quality English-language version might be to download this:
https://xbomber.co.uk/?a=589

The method for ripping practically anything from optical media is always trickier than it has to be, due to disc regions and encryption, and almost always requires specialist software.
I did find a couple of walkthroughs to help with creating SRT files from blu-ray that but I can't point at any given one and say that it definitely works, based on personal experience.

Were you planning on applying English subtitles to the French footage, or something different?
Out of the DVD releases, I think the French one is the best, visually - it was created from a better master reel than the others.

Ah, good shooting.

I haven't got any SRT files or subtitle files on the site, which seems odd that it's not come up before ...

I figure this might be the best way to get them from the DVD: see step 4, which involves Handbrake, which I use for various things and is open-source, free and works on both Windows and Mac OS:
https://www.bluraycopys.com/resource/ex ... u-ray.html

Do you know, is the rip that you've got an upscale from the Japanese DVD, or is it at the same resolution?

I believe on-disc subtitles use an image-based format, so need OCR to convert them to text for .srt format, and probably some manual correction. Try Subtitle Edit?

Yep but my dvd don't have any subtitles. It's french dub only. That's why I'd like to find the .srt somewhere. I'm only interested in jap audio but I don't speak jap.
I don't think my files are upscaled. I don't know. It's better than the french dvd for sure "cleaner". Mkv Tools says it's 640x480.

The US blu-ray that came out the other year has the Japanese version of the show, complete with subtitles, which didn't appear to be baked into the image.
It even includes the "preview show" pilot, complete with subtitles, since it was never dubbed.

The subtitles looked (to me at least) like they were super-imposed as proper text. I remember the typography being sharper than the video itself.
It's a little while since I tried that out. It was really good watching the show that way and it showed up a few subtle differences between the two versions.

(The blu-ray is a single disc with both versions of the series: English language and Japanese, in standard definition).

That might be, for one thing, the easiest way to see the Japanese version subtitled.
But it might also be the easiest way to lift the subtitles from somewhere and apply those to a higher-resolution version of the show in another language.

They're an optional superimposed layer rather than baked in, yes, but my understanding is the blu-ray format still stores subtitles as images, not text.

If anyone is still interested in getting the full X-Bomber subtitles in SRT format let me know. I've been able to extract them from the pilot episode quite easily, so can do the full series if required.

If I get time I might do an upscaled version of X-Bomber with Japanese audio and English subs, but it certainly won't be for a while.

I just extracted the subs for episode 1. I haven't checked them, but if anyone wants to grab them to see what they're like, fill your boots!

That would be great, your work is truly fantastic! It's day and night comparing to existing versions. :D

I'm currently working to add french and Japanese audio on this fantastic work of yours (that I discovered on this site), for my personal use.

Since the work is already done, I can easily upload Star Fleet Ai Uscaled with English and Japanese audio + English sub, if anyone is interested. This way, we could easily switch between English and Japanese audio through
our video player (VLC for exemple). Therefore we could enjoy both "Star Fleet" and "X Bomber" show, with the best quality video available thanks to dym2005, in one single file!
I could easily upload it, but I'm not sure if it's OK to post a MEGA link here to download it ?
